Welcome to The Old Spot Restaurant

My wife Clare and I opened the Old Spot Restaurant in 2006 after having found what we knew was a great position in Wells, a historic cathedral city with a thriving market on the edge of the Mendip Hills, a very beautiful part of the world. We wanted to open a restaurant that reflected our own philosophy of serving good, simple seasonal food that was accessible to everybody, with a wine list and service to match.

Our menus are short, and change weekly so as to reflect the seasons and keep things interesting, and we serve food that we both love to eat, classic regional French and Italian dishes that concentrate on flavour. We also like to use ingredients that you might not see on menus too often, offal is a particular favourite of mine, and game in season, and we encourage our customers to try things that they might not have had before.

We have been, and continue to be inspired by people we have met along the way, Michel Guerard who I first trained with and gave me the passion to cook, Simon Hopkinson who made me think, and really made me understand about what good food is, the dear late and much missed Bill Baker whose passion, knowledge and generosity will leave a lasting impression on both of us, and Stephen and Judy Markwick whose quiet and unassuming dedication to their craft will remain a salutary lesson on how it should be done.
